To me, ear tags epitomize the mistreatment of sentient beings as objects. My ear tag jewelry and accessories represent the lives of thousands of cows, sheep, pigs and goats subjected to the tortures of animal agriculture.
The ear tag numbers featured in my work are the same as those worn by actual cows with whom I have had contact. Like us, each is an individual. What you can’t see in my photo are the many other stalls to the left, right and across from this one, where “10948” and other newborns were kept, intentionally away from their mothers.
Did you know...
that like humans, female cows only make milk following pregnancy? Unfortunately, the dairy industry confiscates that milk for people, rather than allowing it to be fed to the calves for whom it was intended.

What Do You See?
I see a prisoners who are part of a global system. This is an industry in which being tethered, being painted like merchandise, and having numbered tags punched through the ears is normal. I captured these cows at the 50th annual National Junior Angus Show. Here young breeders, aged 7-21, show their cattle and participate in industry-related activities. Indoctination starts at a young age.
