The average breast of an 8-week-old chicken is 7 times heavier today than it was 25 years ago. Does it really matter which came first? Either way, chickens are among the most exploited farmed animals on the planet. Here are some reasons to ditch chicken and eggs:
1) Factory-farmed chickens can’t even spread their wings. Broiler (meat) chickens have more room dead in the oven than they did alive, and egg-laying hens get less space than an iPad.
2) Labels like “free-range,” “cage free” and “humane” often mean little. A windowless shed with one small door can count as free-range.
3) Bred to grow at alarming speeds, chickens suffer painful bone breaks and disease while breathing ammonia-filled air that burns their throats and eyes.
4) Male chicks are useless to the egg industry, so they’re thrown into macerators while still alive or suffocated in bags. This is legal.
5) Hens are bred to lay 20 times more eggs than they used to. This is painful and hard on their overworked bodies.
6) Backyard flocks also depend on hatcheries that ship newborn chicks through the mail with no food or water for up to 3 days.
7) At slaughter, chickens are shackled upside down and have their throats slit. Many are still alive when they’re plunged into scalding water, on lines that kill up to 8,400 birds an hour.
8) Chickens form friendships, recognize up to 100 faces, and nurture their young. Their lives matter to them.

Select the Adult Unisex option if you’re going for a standard t-shirt style. These Bella + Canvas 4.2 oz. shirts are perfect for most sizes and shapes. Want a more fitted look?
Select the Women’s Cut. These are Bella + Canvas’ 4.2 oz. “Favorite Tee,” with a longer body, in addition to being more slender and feminine than the Adult Unisex and Youth options. I think they run very small, so I suggest you order 1 or 2 sizes up.
If you’re shopping for a kid or small adult, the Youth shirts are the way to go. They have a boxier, shorter cut than the Adult Unisex and Women’s Cut designs.
Adult Unisex and Women’s Cut solid colors are 100% combed and ringspun cotton. Heather colors are 52/48 airlume combed and ringspun cotton/polyester. All are W.R.A.P. (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) certified and do not use sweatshops.
Youth shirts are Anvil 4.5 oz. shirts and are 100% combed ringspun cotton for solid colors and a combination of cotton and poly for heather colors.
Toddler shirts and onesies are by LAT Apparel (Rabbit Skins), and are ethically produced in W.R.A.P. certified (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production), sweatshop- and child-labor free factories. Garments are 4.5 oz., 100% combed ringspun cotton; onesies have 3-snap closure.

During avian flu season, it was unsafe for the Heartland Sanctuary chicken residents to roam outside. So, I started taking them for walks in my soft dog carrier to visit their friends in other areas of the property. Sable wasn’t the only bird who was so comfy she didn’t want to get up.
