While I regularly support local markets and vendors as much as possible, I also shop at Costco, a place with which I have a love/hate relationship.
Even if you’ve never set foot inside a Costco, you probably know that you’ve got to buy a lot of whatever it is that you’re purchasing! Every time I go there, I am struck by how many animal related products are for sale. There are literally shelves, cases and more cases full of them. And this is just in one store! Multiply that by 762 warehouses that Costco operated worldwide in 2018,1 and this retailer’s impact is not insignificant.
Looking at the bigger picture, there are 7.7 billion people on this planet and each year, we raise and kill between 56 and 70 billion land animals, not including fish! Some calculations put this figure at 100 billion.2 This amounts to 7 1/2 to 13 times more animals than humans, which is causing enormous problems and amounts of destruction to the planet, to our health, and of course, to the animals.
Next time you’re at the grocery store, please take time to notice just how many animal products there are. You might be surprised at how much of what we consume comes from animals or their bodily secretions.
Because we have been so conditioned and taught to think of these products as food, it is easy to forget – or not know of – the horrific abuse and ultimate death of the slaves of the animal agriculture industry. These victims are primarily babies, killed long before they would die naturally. I hope you’ll think of them when you do your food shopping and know that there are more and more plant-based and cruelty free options out there every day.
